- Call out for someone to get emergency medical help.
-
- Immediate Treatment:
-
- 1. If the victim is near a pier or side of a pool, lie down and give the
- victim your hand or foot to pull to safety.
-
- 2. If the victim is out from the shore, wade into the water, then extend a
- stick, board or rope to pull to safety.
-
- 3. If you need to row a boat out to the victim, hand the victim an oar to
- pull to safety, or let the victim hold on to the back of the boat and row
- to shore.
-
- 4. If a neck or back injury is suspected, place some type of board under
- the head and back to keep the victim from moving. Lift the victim out
- of the water on the board.
-
- 5. Always: Check and maintain an open airway, restore breathing and
- circulation.
-
- 6. If the victim is breathing, place him on his side with head extended
- backward so fluids will drain. Keep the victim warm.
